Peter – Governor General Award Recipient 2012

Congratulations to Peter Eirew who was recently awarded the Governor General’s Gold Medal. This award is awarded to the student who has achieved the most outstanding academic record in the graduating class for the doctoral degree in 2011-2012 at UBC

This award is a tremendous accomplishment for Peter, for his supervisor Connie Eaves, to the Genetics Graduate Program, and every PI and student in CfIS graduate programs!

Isis – Genetics Graduate

2011 was a very productive year for Isis Carter, who gave birth to a daughter in the summer, graduated with a Ph.D. in Genetics in November and took up a new position with StemCell Technologies as a Product Manager of Heamatology. Isis is delighted that she will be able to utilize her prior marketing skills in her new role, whilst keeping abreast of scientific progress.

Daiana – Recent Graduate

Daiana is pictured here in Dr. Wan Lam‘s lab at the BC Cancer Research Centre. Daiana studied for her M.Sc. degree in Genetics under Dr. Shoukat Dedhar. During her Master’s studies Daiana learnt about Dr. Lam’s research and she decided that she wanted to pursue her Ph.D. studies in his lab, so after graduation in May 2011, she joined the Interdisciplinary Oncology Program. Dr. Lam’s research takes a systems or multi-dimensional approach to studying cancer – integrating genomic, epigenomic and transcriptomic events with biologic and clinical features. This powerful approach has the potential to greatly improve our understanding of deregulated pathways and gene networks involved in cancer progression. Mark – Recent Graduate

Mark Bleackley achieved two of his goals this summer: to complete his Ph.D. program in Genetics and to move to Australia. Mark graduated in May 2011 and is now a Post-Doctoral Fellow at La Trobe University, Melbourne, looking at plant immunity to fungal and insect pathogens with Dr. Marilyn Anderson. Mark is pictured here after his degree congregation with his father, Dr. Chris Bleackley, who is a Distinguished University Professor in the department of Biochemistry at the University of Alberta. Tuhina – Recent Graduate

Tuhina graduated with a M.Sc. from the Genetics Graduate Program in May 2011. She worked under Dr. Hélène Côté in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine and her masters research title was: ”Blood Telomere Length in Infants and Their HIV-Infected Mothers Exposed to Antiretroviral Therapy During Pregnancy”.
