Genetics Graduate Program
The Genetics Graduate Program was one of the first interdisciplinary programs at UBC. First offered in 1983, it is an interfaculty and interdepartmental graduate program bringing together students and around 100 professors from 4 UBC faculties (Forestry, Land and Food Systems, Medicine, Science), 14 departments and 7 Research Institutes. Over 150 students have graduated from the Genetics Graduate Program. Graduates move on to Post-Doctoral Fellowships in Canada or overseas, to other degree programs or into industry. Further information about some of our recent graduates is available on this page. Genetics has now become a tool used by all biologists, rather than a field of study in its own right. Most students interested in a genetic approach to biological problems identify an area of biology that interests them, and work with a professor who uses genetic tools. For this reason, we accepted our last intake of new students into the Genetics Graduate Program in 2008. Students with an interest in genetics wishing to pursue a graduate program could consider the Genome Science and Technology Graduate Program, or the Cell and Developmental Biology Program, both housed in the UBC College for Interdisciplinary Studies. Other UBC programs which may be of interest are: Medical Genetics in the Faculty of Medicine, Botany or Zoology in the Faculty of Science or programs offered by the Faculty of Land and Food Systems or the Faculty of Forestry.
